Taking place at Mercabarna in Barcelona, the policy dialogue is titled “Wholesale Markets and Food Redistribution: Opportunities for Social Innovation”, and it is a high-level event dedicated to strengthening fairer and more sustainable food systems across the European Union.the dialogue will convene scholars, NGO representatives, wholesale market professionals, local government officials, and practitioners working in food policy, food security, food waste management, urban food systems, and sustainable urban development. The event aims to foster exchange of best practices and develop policy recommendations to advance effective, equitable, and sustainable urban food systems that ensure access to healthy and affordable food for all.
On the afternoon, from 5 to 7 pm, the project will host a public-facing marketplace session at the Mercat de Sant Antoni. Dedicated stands at the entrances of the market will present and live-test the Food Sharing Compass, an online platform designed to help navigate, strengthen, and scale food sharing initiatives. Several food sharing organizations involved in the project will showcase their work and engage with visitors.
The event represents a unique opportunity to bridge policy, practice, and innovation, reinforcing collaboration between wholesale markets, municipalities, and civil society actors to accelerate systemic transformation within Europe’s urban food environments.
